Workshops

Park Pharmacy Trust is well known for its unique and fascinating workshops. We currently have two types of workshop, our Recall Reminiscence Sessions and our childrens workshops. Both are educational, fun and full of history. We can hold our workshops in our headquarters at Thorn Park Lodge or we can bring the workshop to you. If you would like to book a visit or need more information, please contact us.

Children's Workshop

Our Children's Workshops allow the younger generation to experience how a victorian pharmacy would have worked. With various activities such as pill rolling, toothpaste making and bottle rubbing, the workshop aims to include many elements of the curriculum but in a fun, out of the classroom style.

The workshops have been going for many years with great success, just click on the video to see what Hyde Park Infants School thought of their recent visit.

Recall Reminiscence Sessions

Reminiscence is the process or practice of thinking or talking about past experience. Remembering the past is a  normal activity - people who are not in their own homes surrounded by mementos may not have many chances for spontaneous reminiscence. It allows listeners to gain from the experiences of an older generation. For people who may not be very in the present, the past can provide a more vivid topic of conversation.

The Park Pharmacy Trust arranges reminiscence sessions for local care homes and drop-in centres. By bringing items from our extensive collection of household, medicinal and pharmaceutical products, memories and some of the old smells to help people remember.

Rather than just say "Do you remember..?" we prefer to encourage and offer clues as this gives an elderly person the sense of being heard and perhaps valuable if they, and not others, solve the clue and remember the object. Sessions are undertaken with small groups. Two volunteers will bring a variety of material from our collections; each workshop lasts one to two hours.

Workshops can be chosen to focus on a choice of topics:
-Babies and childcare
-Medicines and remedies
-Women's health and beauty
-Men's grooming
-Spring cleaning

Focussing on a single topic is a useful way to make sure there is shared interest and knowledge. Mothers may remember well the nappy-changing, colic-comforting, cod liver oil dosing joys of babycare, men maybe more familiar with the paraphenalia of wet-shaving and the shared experience of the barbershop!

Reminiscence is more concerned with communication then with achieving factually accurate history. Telling and retelling, discussion and retelling, discussion and interaction between the teller and the listener all influence the story. It does not matter if the details change. It encourages sociability and feelings of self worth.
Our expirience shows that handling the artefacts, smelling the lotions and potions and recognising the brand names of their youth can inspire and engage almost anyone who attends a session.

Reminiscence sessions provide opportunities for positive achievement to people with degrees of physical or mental frailty. Activities are designed so people succeed and get a sense of achievement. Shared memories usually spark off associated recollections in others leading to further stories. Many older care home residents may only be able to give their carers a small piece of themselves - all there is time for them, at that moment. Reminiscence is a way of appreciating the individuality of people and being reminded of their long personal and social past.
Having formal reminiscence sessions ensures that there is time for conversation. Talking part in them can be a creative process for the staff involved and add to job satisfaction.
